The United Kingdom went to the polls on Thursday and voted to leave the European Union (EU) with 52% of Britons voting to leave and 48% voting to remain in the EU. Because the UK decided to leave the EU, it will not longer be included in the economic and legal benefits that EU members receive.
What led the UK to decide to leave many of their close European allies? Most of the British discontent with the EU stems from the desire for the UK to control how many refugees (regarding the Syrian refugee crisis) it allows in its border and the desire for the UK to control its own trade policies. The “Brexit” has, within a day of the results, thrown the future of the UK’s economy into uncertainty after the Prime Minister of the UK decided to step down from his position as the nation’s leader.
Bernie or Bust?
In an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo, Senator Bernie Sanders, who is still in the race to win the Democratic nomination, said that he would vote for Hillary Clinton in November against the presumptive Republican nominee, Donald Trump.
But Sanders supports shouldn't give up just yet. The self-described Democratic Socialist said that his “job ... is to fight to make sure that the Democratic Party ... has the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party.”
President Obama proposed reforms to the nation's immigration system back in 2014 by shielding millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation and allowing them to seek employment. This reform was challenged legally by 26 states and the case went all the way to the Supreme Court. However, following the death of Antonin Scalia the Court has only had 8 Justices -- rather than the normal 9.
In a one sentence ruling, the Court ruled that the legal challenges to the reforms could not be ruled upon by the Court because “The judgment is affirmed by an equally divided Court.” This means that four Justices ruled in favor of the reforms and four ruled against. The case will likely finish in a lower court where the reforms will not be carried out.
Democratic Representatives to Congress, as well as a few Senators, were led by Rep. Elijah Cummings of Georgia in staging a 25-hour long sit-in on the floor of the House of Representatives in order to force Congress to vote on a gun control bill. “No bill, no break” became their slogan and it gained traction as a population hashtag online.
Following the horrendous massacre of innocent people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, Congress voted against four pieces of gun-control legislation causing many Democrats in Congress to join Cummings in his protest over the government’s action.
Pixar’s sequel to their animated film Finding Nemo premiered last weekend with total of $260 million in box office sales since its opening.
